 Kowak Girls' Secondary School

Kowak Girls’ Secondary School (KGSS) provides high school education for girls from all parts of Tanzania. Founded in 1992 the school is located in the Mara region near Lake Victoria, a poor, rural area in Tanzania, one of the poorest countries in the world.

KGSS is a top ranking secondary school (high school) in the region and nation. Of the 500+ girls that apply each year, only 125 are admitted based on their national exam scores and primary school performance. Wealthier families are able to afford the approximate $1,000 annual tuition, room and board, while girls from poorer families depend on scholarships. Graduates from KGSS have gone on to be teachers, nurses, doctors, lawyers and community leaders.

In Tanzania, a secondary education means more than opportunity. For some girls, it provides a way out of child marriage, sexual and spousal abuse, female genital mutilation, and HIV/AIDS.

Graduates of the Girls' Secondary School pursue further education and become teachers, businesses managers, medical professionals, lawyers, Government representatives, and serve as role models for other girls.
